What are VGTs in Casinos?

In some states like Illinois, VGTs are widely available at establishments that serve alcohol, such as bars and restaurants. Illinois passed legislation in 2012 allowing VGTs outside of casinos, and today it has about 45,000 terminals. State and local governments get a cut of the proceeds from the license fees and video gaming taxes of VGTs. In states like Pennsylvania, VGTs can only operate at approved diesel fuel truck stops.

Differences between slot machines and VGTs

Today, many individuals will use a gambling app on a cell phone to play slot games at online casinos. Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) are similar to slot machines in some ways and different in others. Casino slots tend to offer a single game.

Video gaming terminals (VGTs) are electronic machines that offer a range of games. The games may include keno, roulette, bingo, and various forms of card games. The player can choose from various games on a single machine. VGTs only accept cash, and the maximum bet is $10.

Valid licenses

Licenses need to be issued by the state gaming board for the operation of a VGT. Video gaming terminals are usually located in areas restricted to persons over 21 years of age. There are also usually restrictions on the number of VGTs at each establishment. Most video gaming locations allow a maximum of six VGTs. As they each have so many titles, this still gives players plenty of options. Players cash out and get a ticket redeemed at a separate terminal.

Technological advancements

Technological advancements play a role in driving the VGT market. As hardware and software technology improves, VGTs offer more immersive experiences. Higher speed, better resolution, improved graphics, and good audio all help to offer higher engagement. The use of tech in businesses is increasing all the time, and working with software developers from around the world allows firms to offer top software products that foster innovation.

Central Communications System (CCS)

A VGT connects to a central communications system (CCS) that provides the monitoring. It allows for turning on and off of machines according to the hours on an establishment’s liquor license. It may shut down a specific game that seems to have an issue. It can turn off all VGTs in a particular establishment if a gambling board imposes disciplinary action.

Increase in market size

The increase in gaming market size is also driving the VGT market. US market size reached over US$4945 million in 2022 and is expected to reach over US$7399 million by 2028. The gaming board in a state has discretion on almost every decision about who can participate within an individual market. Gaming legislation can be difficult to pass, but more states are allowing VGTs and benefiting from the tax revenue they generate.
